GAOC for Jan. 9 -Kenya Elections

Kenyans pray in Nairobi after violence on December 27, 2007

According to the Scotsman, Scotland, Kenya’s president Mwai Kibaki states Kenya’s death toll caused by riots at 500 and the number displaced as 255,000, making this the largest crisis in Kenya since its independence from Britain in 1963. According to many Kenyan citizens, the recent elections were “null and void” while the electoral officials were “dishonest and ineptitude.” Mr. Kibaki’s win was seemingly unjust to the peoples because sources had told them that the other candidate, Raila Odinga was several votes ahead or at least even with Mr. Kibaki. But when Mr. Kibaki won by many votes, Kenyans believed the December 27, 2007 election to be rigged and unfair. Although Mr. Kibaki and the government stated the death toll as 500, Mr. Odinga places it “closer to thousand.”

Mr. Odinga is currently being urged by the African Union, the head is John Kufuor, to avoid causing and provoking more riots and deaths. Mr. Odinga in turn is urging Mr. Kibaki to agree with the “transitional movement” and arrange another election in the next three-six months.
