Freddy Adu, the 18-year-old captained a U.S. squad that outplayed Brazil for a 2-1 victory during the group stages, but fell to Austria in the quarter-finals in extra time. Adu was snapped up from Real Salt Lake of the MLS by Portugal for a transfer fee of (US) $2-million shortly after the tournament's end. Adu signed a five-year deal with the club worth about (US) $1.25-million a year. Despite having limited playing time, the American has quickly become a fan favorite for a team that is consistently near the top of Portugal's top division.
